Feng Shui Defined - An Ancient Chinese Art and Science
Feng Shui is the ‘Wind’ and ‘Water’ of the Earth. It is the balance of Yin and Yang and the Five Primordial Elements dancing in divine harmony through cycles of birth and destruction. A natural art. A life-force science. A study of the ebb and flow of earth energies and their influence on human experience and behavior. Feng Shui embodies the ‘chi’ that resides outside the human physical form, Chi that is both the cause of every natural formation and the effect of every man-made structure. Feng Shui encompasses the analysis and transformation of land formations, the energetic blueprint of built environments, structural design, space allocation, interior arrangement and décor, and the mutual influence and interaction of human life forces within a space. Each purposefully selected space becomes a life-stage. Personalizing through design and décor, the entire environment becomes the outer reflection of the inner being, like a mirror reflecting intentions, experiences and realities. One cannot separate person and place. They co-exist and co-create. Utilizing Feng Shui subtly and significantly adjusts the flow of Chi through spaces creating balance and harmony to improve health and vitality, abundance and prosperity, and personal and professional relationships.
Principles of Feng Shui
An Understanding of our Universe
Feng Shui is rooted in the Ancient Chinese theory of nature. There was nothingness, called Mu Chi, from which duality was born – Yin and Yang. These complementary, non-opposing forces create matter and therefore, all living things. This matter is classified into 5 primordial elements that make up everything in our universe; they are Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal. The study of the relationship of these Five Elements reveals the different types of energies that are always at work. The Chinese believe these five basic forces affect and influence the tangible and abstract, and specifically, human fortune. The interactions of these elements follow certain rules that are classified as the Cycle of Production, Cycle of Reduction and the Cycle of Destruction. It is these cycles that bring about activity and change. Understanding the elemental interactions provides insight on how to determine which Feng Shui adjustments should be made within an environment. The original energies of Yin and Yang are expressed as broken and solid lines respectively. When combined into 3 lines that represent Heaven, Earth and Man, eight Trigrams were formed. Each Trigram was assigned meanings that ultimately described everything in the universe. It was a primitive but ingenious way in which to understand the universe and all natural phenomena.
